Semarang Fieldtrip: Understanding Pluralism


On May 16, 2019 Kalyca Adolescent Community (SMP BOPKRI 2 Yogyakarta) held a field trip program. This field trip is an annual program and followed by grade 7-9. This year, the school chose pluralism as a theme. The students departed from school at 6.30 a.m. using a bus.

In one day, the students were invited to see and understand the implementation of pluralism by themselves. During the trip, they visited several worship places in Semarang; Masjid Agung Semarang, Gereja Kathedral Semarang, Gua Maria Kerep Ambarawa, Sam Poo Kong and Pagoda Avalokitesvara. They can learn about pluralism by observation or dialog with local citizen in groups.

Besides learning about pluralism, the students also learnt about the worship places’ history and architecture. They had the chance to see how religions and cultures met and creating and something new. At last, they students also had a chance to visit an iconic building in the heart of Semarang, Lawang Sewu. In there, they learnt about the history and architecture of the building.

Those places were chosen based on the consideration that they represent almost all religions in Indonesia which are Christian, Chatolic, Islam, Hindhu, Buddha, and Konghucu. Besides, those places are also suitable places to learn Indonesian history and culture.
