The Christmas for Kalyca’s PG-KG was held on 13th of January 2017 in Putri Putri Yesus Kristus (PPYK) Dormitory. The place is located in Kregan, Pakemgedhe, Pakembinangun, Pakem, Sleman. The aim of this event was sharing the joyful of Christmas.
The theme for this Christmas was “For on this day, in the town of David, a Savior has come to birth, who is Christ the Lord (Luke 2 : 11 )”. The children, teachers and dormitory’s caretakers (nuns) were having worship together. They were singing, dancing and listening a story about Jesus.
The story was told by Pdt. Rena Sesaria Yudhita. She made collaboration with some Kalyca’s teachers to show a short drama to the children. The drama was about why Jesus comes to the world.
In the end of the event, the school gave donation, which were gathered from the parents, to the dormitory.
Hopefully, the joy of this Christmas always be with us.
On Tuesday, January 9th, 2017 The Adolescent Community joined the Ecobricks Workshop in Bale Banjar Sangkring or Sangkring Art Spaces, Nitiprayan, Bantul. This Ecobricks Workshop was part of the exhibition “Transcending Trash: Collaboration Exhibition of The Journey of Social and Creative Movement for Clean and Green Indonesia” by Ecobricks.org.

Based on Ecobricks.org, ecobricks are some plastic bottles stuffed solid with non-biological waste to create a reusable building block. Ecobricks are used to make modular furniture, garden spaces and full scale buildings such as schools and houses. On Thursday, January 19th, 2017 Kalyca Adolescent Community student held Christmas Celebration in Panti Asuhan Cacat Ganda (Double Disabilities Orphanage) Sayap Ibu Foundation, Purwomartani Kalasan. We celebrated Christmas in a different way. This time, we shared love and care to the children who lived in Panti Asuhan Cacat Ganda. We brought used toys and also books and donate them to children in Panti. This Christmas Celebration also part of service learning program.
In Panti, there were 27 children who had more than one disabilities. Some children had several disabilities in one person and because of that, they were only able to take care of by their caregivers. Some other children were able to go to special school. Luckily, Sayap Ibu had their own school for these children.
We spent three hours to this service learning. We interacted, communicated with them. Each of us had to socialize and communicate with them. In the beginning, it was so hard to play and communicate...
God who Gives Peace
Kalyca Elementary School held Christmas celebration on January, 13th 2017. We had a little celebration to celebrate God’s birth. The children were excited to have Christmas celebration and some of them had an opportunity to be the MC, lector, and prayer.
This celebration was served by Pdt. Rena Sesaria Yudita. She told Christmas story and its meaning in a way easily understood by the children. With the theme “God who Gives Peace” the children were asked to keep trying to get the better result just like God that never gives up in loving us.
Kalyca held an Open House on November 5th, 12nd, and 13th to introduce The Montessori to the society. Kalyca took Natural Environment as a main theme. This year, the focus was on The Adolescent Community Program. Related to this event, we had several activities on these three days.
1. Kids in the Museum: Treasure Hunt

Our first activity was Kids in the Museum on November 5th 2016 and located in Vredeburg Fort Museum at 5.00 – 9.00 P.M. this activity was for children on 10 – 13 years age, and worked together with Night at The Museum Community. This activity had theme, called “Treasure Hunt”.
The participants were divided into several groups and they had to find the treasure in this museum. The purpose of this activity was to introduce Kalyca Adolescent Community to the participants and their parents. They really enjoyed this activity. Our preschool class had one of our annual events, which is Field Trip. It was held on 3-4 May 2016. This activity was designed for the children of 1.5 to 6 years old. According to their ages and capabilities, the children are divided into two groups with different destinations.
The field trip for 3-6 students was held in Banyu Sumilir, located on Desa Srowolan, Pakem, Sleman. This year’s field trip was slightly different because we provided outbound activities including flying fox and fun games to foster the students to be brave, supportive, able to take risk and make decision. Besides, the students were also treated to a river-tracking and had a catching fish activity in a big fishpond. After hours, they closed the field trip by swimming altogether. On Monday, 2nd of May, 2016, The elementary students had a fieldtrip to Cimory, Bawen as an annual program. This trip was also held as a part of outdoor learning activities.
In Cimory, we did some activities such as : garden and farm tour, watching the video of production and processing standards of dairy products, cooking demo, milking cow, and also observing the dairy factory.

To review the common characteristics of cow as mammal.
To recognize the special characteristics and anatomy of cow and its digestive system.

As a part of Adolescent Community program, last March, we held a mini trip event with a topic “Animal and Plant Kingdom.” The aim of a half-day mini trip for Adolescent Community students was to learn more about Animal and Plant Kingdom. The core subject of this mini trip was Science which also covers some other subjects, such as English and Mathematic as a system of interdependency or subject across the curriculum.
Since our core subject was Science, our objectives in conducting this mini trip are as follows.
Identify plants and animals and their characteristics.
Classify plants and animals using taxonomy.
Identify behavior, habitat, reproduction, and adaptation of the animals and plants.
Identify the food chain and food web.
As for English, the objectives were as follows.
Communicate with experts, specialists and members of the wider community. Applying writing strategy; take notes.
Preparing and writing simple research report.
As a part of Adolescent Community program, on 28 – 29 April, we held a field trip event with a topic “Ecotourism: The Beach” in Sadranan Beach, Gunungkidul. The aim of two-days-one-night field trip for Adolescent Community students was exploring the beach ecology, especially at Sadranan Beach.
The core subjects of this field trip were Science and Geography which also cover some other subjects, such as History and Humanity as a system of interdependency or subject across the curriculum. Through this field trip, we’d like to teach about being independent and team building to the students.
In Sadranan, students made some science experiment and also identified and analysed the physical characteristic of the beach. Sincethe core subjects were Science and Geography, the objectives in conducting this field tripwere as follows:
Identify different water density.
Identify electric energy.
Identify and describe beach ecosystem, both biotic and abiotic....
Dr. Maria Montessori built an education method that is admitted and used by people around the world as a method which is based on the principles of the child’s natural development.
Montessori believed that a child is inherently good within all of the wonderful and special in the whole child. A child is not an empty vessel.
As part of the nature, a child has an inner drive of learning that is connected to everything in the world around them naturally to have all things meaningfully for him/her to see the holistic way of life and build his/her own life.
If a child is allowed to develop it freely within the environment that will support the developing all potentials withim him/her. (more…)
